Canvas Gradebook – FAQs

Yes. All student grades can be downloaded as a csv file using the Export button in Gradebook. (Gradebook export files include the date and time of the download to differentiate between multiple exports. The export filename format is YYYY-MM-DDTHHMM, followed by the course name).

Yes. Select the ellipsis in the column header of the targeted assignment and select Download Submissions. This will download all submissions as a .zip file.

Yes. Grades in the Gradebook will usually be populated from the marks recorded in Speedgrader for student submissions. However, these grades can be entered manually or uploaded to Gradebook as a csv file. Grades entered manually for students in the Gradebook will appear in Speedgrader against each student’s submission.

Yes. There are a number of different filters that can be applied in Gradebook to narrow down the viewing of large numbers of students and/or assessments. Gradebook can be filtered by Sections and Diff Tags, Modules, student Groups, Assignment Groups, Statuses and Start and End Dates.

Yes. The Gradebook Individual View allows instructors to assess one student and one assignment at a time.

Yes. In Gradebook, select the ellipsis on the column header of Student Name and select either ‘Inactive Students’ or ‘Concluded Students’ as required. 

How do I view grades for inactive or concluded student enrollments in the Gradebook? – Instructure Community 

Yes. In the Gradebook column for the required assignment, when students have submitted they will have a symbol for that assignment that resembles a page with a small clock. However, if the assignment has been set to anonymous (marking), the column will be greyed out and no submission information will be displayed (to maintain an element of anonymity). In this case all student submissions information can be downloaded as a report from the Course Analytics of the Canvas unit course, called ‘Missing Assignments’. The report will be updated every 8 hours.  

 Yes. When the grade posting policy is set to manual (the default setting), select the ellipsis on the assignment column heading and select Post Grades. This will present you with 3 further options, Everyone, Graded and Specific Sections. Remember that ‘Graded’ refers to student work that has either a grade or comments recorded.

Yes. By enabling the Notes option on the Gradebook settings, a notes column will appear next to the student name column. Notes can be recorded for each student as required.

Yes. For each assignment students can be directly messaged for the following situations/statuses,

Have not yet submitted, Have Submitted, Have not been graded, Scored more than, Scored less than.

Yes. In the Gradebook settings (Cog) late policies can be set for the course assignments. There are two main options available:

Automatically apply grade for missing submissions

Automatically apply deduction to late submissions.

Yes. It is always advised that where possible, a student submits their work. If this is not possible and a member of staff has a student submission, and they have the correct permissions to do so (Teacher, Secondary Teacher, Course Administrator, Admin and Admin+), the work can be submitted in the Gradebook.
