This guide will help you to determine if a student submitted their Turnitin (TII) submission late. It is split into 3 sections: Turnitin All Students View (no anonymity), Turnitin By Groups View (no anonymity) and Turnitin All Students View (with anonymity enabled).
Turnitin All Students View (no anonymity)
To ascertain if your students were late, you will need to wait until any anonymity has been removed following the completion of marking. Once student names are released, you should:
- enter the Blackboard Course
- locate the assignment in question and click on the submission link
- wait for the assignment inbox to load
- view any late submissions, indicated by RED time/dates in the submission inbox.
Please Note: You may need to alter your view of the submission inbox to include more than 10 papers. To do this, enter the TII inbox and choose “preferences” at the top of the inbox. Here, change your “items per page” to “1000” and “Submit”. You will now see all papers.
Turnitin By Groups View (no anonymity)
Viewing Turnitin via Groups enables you to see a small number of select students within the class, for example, your Tutorial Group.
When viewing Turnitin by groups, there are a few more steps to take in order to locate late submissions.
To ascertain if your students were late, you will need to wait until any anonymity has been removed following the completion of marking. Once student names are released, you should:
- enter the Blackboard Course
- locate the assignment in question and click on the submission link
- wait for the assignment inbox to load
- use the drop-down menu at the top of the list of submissions to select your group
- view any late submissions, indicated by RED time/dates in the submission inbox.
Turnitin All Students View (with anonymity enabled)
If anonymity is enabled in Turnitin, it can be very difficult to work out which of your students you need to penalise for late submission. However, there are ways in which you can see whether your students were late or not, without removing anonymity, as long as you and your students have promoted the faculty-recommended “Standard Naming Convention” in regards to paper upload.
If you feel that you may wish to decrease marks based on late submission, you should plan appropriately and:
- inform your students that they need to upload their files using the standard naming convention: Marker Surname, Student ID, Unit Code. For example: HILTON87654321BIOL10000
When it comes to locating papers for just your students, you should:
- locate the search box at the top of the submission inbox
- enter your surname – you will then be shown all papers which contain your surname
- observe whether or not the date stamp is red and if so, use your local policy to decide on any mark reductions
- repeat for each submission.
Please Note: It is university policy to anonymously mark papers; you should never use the “Student ID” to locate a paper before marking. This is used in the standard naming convention to assist administrative staff with queries submitted by students.
