The FBMH eLearning Team has developed a training plan tailored to your role and current Blackboard use. Learning pathways are designed for Unit Coordinators, Teaching Staff, and PS Staff, offering scheduled training and “just-in-time” support to meet your needs. This page contains the details of the training and any available booking forms.

Unit Construction
Unit Construction is designed for Unit Coordinators to help them organise Blackboard-migrated content into Canvas Modules. This training covers how to:
- Navigate the Canvas system
- Use key Canvas tools and functionality, including creating, editing, copying and moving modules, pages, files, and multimedia
- Apply pedagogical good practices to course design for Canvas, including utilising the university/faculty template
- Use quality control tools, including the accessibility checker, student view and link validator
- Obtain further support

Canvas Basics
Designed for any FBMH staff members who do not coordinate units, but need to use Canvas in their role. This training covers:
- How to navigate Canvas
- The differences between Canvas and Blackboard content
- How to create and edit Modules in Canvas
- How to create accessible content pages in Canvas
- How to copy content between courses
We recommend that Unit Coordinators attend ‘Unit Construction Workshops’ (above) before encouraging teaching staff to join Canvas Basics. This will ensure that there is a course to build content in.

Quizzes and Testing in Canvas
This training is designed for Unit Coordinators and teaching staff who are responsible for creating, editing, or managing online tests and quizzes. It will help you understand how to work with migrated Blackboard tests and how to build new assessments using Canvas’s quiz functionality. You will:
- Cover the process of adding your old Blackboard Tests (already moved into Canvas) into your course unit
- Learn about the Canvas Quiz system
- Look at imported and new question types
- Cover how to add feedback and marks

Unit Deployment Workshops
As we come closer to 8th September and the release of Canvas, the ‘Unit Deployment Workshops’ are designed to bring together everything you have learned, and ensure your course is ready for teaching to begin.
You will:
- Review your course structure and settings for accessibility and pedagogic alignment
- Learn how to create, edit, and schedule Announcements, Discussions, and Inbox messages
- Use the Canvas Calendar to add and manage events
- Apply Publish and Module Settings to control student access

Personal Training Plans
Choose what type of staff member you are using the table below to learn more about the most appropriate training pathway:

Training
Use the tabs shown here to choose the type of staff member that best represents you. This will present your personal training pathway. Information includes details of both advised and optional sessions available to you.
As there are over 2,500 staff to train in Canvas, you will be invited to one of only a handful of specific slots that cover similar unit types. You will be expected to prioritise this training wherever possible. This is to ensure that the Faculty is prepared to start teaching with Canvas in September 2025. Units that have no activity will have unit coordinators contacted throughout the Spring and Summer months.
Support
Throughout this training and transition process, you will have access to in-person support where you can ‘drop in’ to work alongside a member of the eLearning team. We will also offer bespoke appointments via a booking form for those staff with unusual or non-standard courses.
As a unit coordinator, you must ensure that content migrated from Blackboard to Canvas (via IT Services) is well-organised, functional, and accessible.
Canvas offers improved navigation, but re-organising the transitioned content is essential. Your training includes:
- Online Pre-Work – Familiarise yourself with Canvas layout and verify content migration.
- Canvas Unit Construction Workshop – Learn the Canvas structure and begin organising your course.
- Ongoing Support – You will then be able to revisit the workshop asynchronously and attend in-person drop-in sessions with eLearning staff.
- Summer Training – Attend courses relevent to your needs in Canvas: Canvas Basics (optional) as a refresher. Canvas Assessments is split into two (one for transitioning your Blackboard Tests and the other for Creating submitable assignments for students), and Canvas Studio (optional).
- Later in the summer, you’ll attend the Canvas Unit Deployment Workshop to finalise and deploy your unit for the 2025-26 academic year, ensuring it meets teaching standards.
If you collaborate closely with teaching staff, they are welcome to join you in both the Canvas Unit Construction and Canvas Unit Deployment Workshops.
Semester 1: Follow the training pathway from April through summer to prepare for September.
Semester 2 & Full Year Units: Attend Canvas Basics and Canvas Assessments in summer. Workshop dates for Unit Construction and Deployment will be available from July to mid-winter.
If you need to use Canvas for uploading materials, managing assessments, or communicating with students, follow this training path.
If you’re heavily involved in course structure and management, consider attending the Unit Coordinator pathway with your coordinator.
